Cranberries: A Tiny Fruit Packed with Big Health Benefits
Cranberries are small, round, deep red berries that are related to blueberries. Since they have a sharp, sour taste, most people prefer to eat them dried or drink them as juice rather than eating them raw.
Growing on vine-like plants similar to those of strawberries, cranberries typically originate in North America or Eastern Europe. You can also grow them in the UK, provided the right conditions are met. Harvest usually occurs between September and November, with fresh cranberries in UK shops from October to December.

The Nutritional Goodness of Cranberries

Cranberries are packed with nutrients that help support your immune system, heart, and urinary tract. They contain vitamins like C, E, and K, as well as minerals such as manganese and copper. These nutrients help protect your cells, boost collagen production, and keep your blood vessels healthy.

How to eat Cranberries

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the benefits of this tart berry is through cranberry juice. Known for its bright red color and tangy flavor, cranberry juice is often consumed to support urinary tract health. It’s rich in antioxidants and polyphenols that help reduce inflammation and support the body’s natural detoxification processes.
While traditional cranberry juice is deep red, white cranberry juice comes from cranberries harvested before they fully ripen. It has a milder, slightly sweeter taste but offers many of the same health benefits as the classic red version.
If you prefer a snack you can take on the go, dried cranberries are an excellent option. These chewy, flavorful treats provide many of the same cranberry health benefits, though with a more concentrated sugar content. Still, the dried cranberries’ health benefits are impressive — they offer antioxidants, fiber, and nutrients that support digestion and cardiovascular health.
In fact, cranberry dried health benefits include promoting good gut bacteria and improving iron absorption when paired with vitamin C-rich foods. Just be sure to choose low-sugar or unsweetened varieties when possible.

A Christmas Classic

Cranberry Sauce has been traditionally served at Christmas time with turkey and stuffing. Whereas in the USA and Canada they usually have sweetened Cranberry Sauce for Thanksgiving.

Homemade Cranberry Juice Recipe

Ingredients

450g fresh or frozen cranberries

1 litre of water

1/4 to 1/2 cup honey

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

1. In a large pot, add the cranberries and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10–15 minutes, or until the cranberries burst open and soften.

2. Use a spoon or potato masher to crush the cranberries and release their juice. Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a bowl or pitcher. Press the pulp to extract as much juice as possible.

3. Stir in honey whilst the juice is still warm and add a spoonful of lemon juice.

4. Let the cranberry juice cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Serve cold over ice, or dilute with water or sparkling water if you prefer a lighter flavor.
