From the 6th of April the government have announced that a new mandatory calorie labelling law will be in place to
help the public make healthier choices when eating out. Calories will be labelled on menus and food labels in and Outof-home food businesses from April 2022

What is it?
To help the public to make healthier choices when eating out. Calories will be labelled on menus and food labels in out-of-home food businesses from April 2022, the government has announced.

Is every food business required to make these changes?
No currently the legislation will only affect large ‘Out of Home’ business with 250 or more employees in England, including cafes, restaurants and takeaways.

Should I consider labelling this information anyway?
Eventually this legislation may be applied to smaller businesses so definitely worth considering for the future. Also, in a recent Public Health England survey, 79% of respondents said they think menus should include the number of calories in food and drinks – so its something customers may want to see soon.
