Last week, we welcomed Alex, a college student studying for a Level 3 Diploma in Marketing, into the team for a work experience placement. Alex threw himself into everything we had going on, and before he left, we asked him to jot down his thoughts on the week – what he got up to, what he enjoyed, and what he took away from his time with us.
Here’s what he had to say:
“When I applied for work experience at Dunsters Farm, I wanted to gain a real understanding of how a marketing team operates day to day and see how the theory I’ve learned in college is applied in a real business environment.
Over the course of my week with the team, I had the opportunity to get involved in multiple marketing activities. I supported content planning, drafted live blog posts, and helped edit and update content on the Dunsters Farm e-commerce website. I also worked closely with colleagues across the business, attended meetings, and spent time gathering content and social media material around the site.
One of my favourite parts of the experience was content planning and creation, particularly recording videos for Dunsters Farm. It was great to see how ideas are developed into content that engages customers and supports the company’s wider marketing goals.
I also found writing blog posts especially valuable, as it gave me the opportunity to develop my writing skills and learn how Dunsters communicate their events, achievements, and recipes to different audiences. This is something I believe will be particularly useful in my future career in marketing.
Overall, my work experience at Dunsters Farm exceeded my expectations. It gave me a real insight into the nature of a marketing department and helped me build practical skills that will support me as I continue to work towards a career in marketing. I’m forever grateful to the team for giving me this opportunity, making me feel welcome, and for giving me such a hands-on experience.”
We also caught up with our Managing Director, Hannah Barlow, for her thoughts on hosting work experience placements:
“We’re incredibly proud to offer work experience placements, and we believe they play a vital role in helping young people take their first steps into the industry. It was a genuine pleasure to have Alex with us this week – he was a fantastic addition to the team, and I’ve no doubt he’ll go on to achieve great things in his career.
“I’d encourage any employer who can to offer work experience opportunities; it’s a small commitment that can make a real difference to someone’s future.”
A big thank you to Alex for all his hard work, we wish him every success as he continues his marketing journey!
